Before we talk about accountability partners, I would like to share an ancient African proverb that states:
“If you want to go fast walk alone, if you want to go far walk together”.
But it’s not just a matter of crowd. The quality of the people you have with you will play a big part in your success or the lack of it. That’s why my advice today is to make sure you have accountable people by your side.
What is accountability?
According to this website, accountability has to do with answerability, blameworthiness, liability, and the expectation of reporting back on particular outcomes. Essentially, it is the way in which an individual chooses to respond and takes ownership of the results of a task that has been assigned to them.
This value is also related to the fulfillment of personal, family, work, and civic obligations; with obedience to the authorities, to our conscience and beliefs. Rather than being seen as a sign of moral slavery, all of this is seen as a form of commitment that dignifies our person and leads us on the path of goodness.
What is the point of accountability?
Especially on this topic I try so hard to highlight, which is the achievement of our goals and success in whatever you set out to do, being responsible is an extremely important and useful factor.
It is the foundation for the rest of the values we have addressed in previous publications. It helps us to take control of our lives and our destiny. Accountability, both yours and of those around you, help us to be more:
- Honest: Accountability is based on the honesty of your character. It’s about sticking to your morals, your version and opinion, even if not everyone likes it. Telling the truth leads us to keep our promises and to be recognized as reliable people by others.
- Independent: Assuming the consequences of our actions allows us to think carefully before acting and thus to make better decisions.
- Trustworthy: When we are accountable, we gain the trust of others. And in the process, we also gain self-confidence. Doing the right thing makes us feel good. That’s because even if everything does not always turn out well, we feel fulfilled knowing that we have done our best.
Why is it important to have an accountability partner?
The hardest things to accomplish are the ones we have to do on our own. But when we have someone who knows what we are doing, who supports us and helps us stay focused on our path and the end goal, productivity improves tremendously.
The trick is to find that ideal person who will always be with us or who can simply keep you focused on your obligations. And to find them, trust is fundamental. Not only to share your deepest aspirations. You should also be sure that their contribution is exactly what you need to progress.
Conversely, my partner is not accountable at all.
It all depends on how you look at it. While having a great supporter gives you that extra boost you need to keep going, an irresponsible person can also be helpful.
Not everyone is motivated by positive feedback. That’s why having someone irresponsible might work occasionally. Surrounding yourself temporarily – I emphasize “temporarily”, and as long as you don’t get infected by their way of being – with a negative figure can also be good.
It helps you to realize what you don’t need in your life at this moment. It makes it clear to you what you don’t want in the people around you and helps you to see all the good in you.
On the other hand, having no one to count on makes you work even harder on your own. From getting motivated to engage yourself every day to getting all the tasks done.
Exploring Someone’s Accountability level
Since accountability is then based on our responses, how do we improve our ability to respond and then develop a greater sense of responsibility? We can take a few minutes to think about ourselves, our family and environment, and ask ourselves:
Are you satisfied with the way you respond to your needs and responsibilities?
You can apply this analysis to yourself as well as to the person you are leaning on and decide if their company really benefits you. In your case, review and work on improving your response capacity and quality.
Remember that the most beautiful thing about human beings is our intelligence and will, which allow us to shape our behavior. The road to a full and happy life, where personal fulfillment is attainable, is driven by the vehicle of accountability.
