Commitment Sets Us Free

Today, we’ll be talking about commitment. At first, it may seem contradictory, I know, but how is it that tying myself to a promise will set me free?

Well, there are two clear examples from everyday life that prove me right. Truth and love are two great demonstrations of how commitment means freedom:

  • Commitment is based on honesty, and the truth sets us free. It has the power to nourish us, to build and give meaning and purpose to life. It also has the ability to untie those strings that hold us in slavery, that oppress, sadden, and alienate us.
  • Love. Committing to love someone for the rest of your life is not a prison sentence, it is freedom and union that makes you feel blessed to be where you are and who you are with.

Neither love is a cagenor is freedom being aloneLove is the freedom to fly together, it is to let be without possessing”

Gabriel García Márquez

But before the romance takes over, we continue our way to share today how it is possible to experience a fulfilling life through commitment.

On countless occasions, we have shared how success is a combination of values. Today, we add a very important one to that list: commitment.

Having a goal, working on it, and following every instruction you have been told is not enough. Your decisions and your conviction can lead you to the achievement of your goal most of the times. But commitment is also essential.

What does it mean to commit to something

When we talk about taking the road to success, commitment means taking responsibility for what we want, for what we do to achieve it, and for the good or bad outcomes of our actions. It means having to take wise risks on every step of the way with the hope that the result will be worth it.

Committing is not just wishing, or making plans, or visualizing, or getting involved in something. It is doing all this and more.

Discouragement kills the capacity for commitment

Discouragement is fatal to the will to keep going. It can result from both failure and lack of results. A person is not 100% committed to their project if they are only enthusiastic as long as things are going well. Back to the example at the beginning, is love a real commitment when an argument tears it apart or when two people struggle to overcome these small differences?

If you choose to abandon your aspirations instead of making a minimum effort as soon as things get hard, you must increase your dose of commitment.

5 forms of commitment to ensure success

Commitment is a vital value when it comes to achieving success and fulfillment. It requires an unwavering firmness to fulfill what you have set as a goal, or sometimes, simply doing what you have to do.

It is precisely the value we need for dreams to materialize because, without it, it is impossible to achieve anything.

Whatever you set out to do, there is a form of commitment that you must stick to along the way. The right one for you is here among the following:

1.      Commitment to excellence

The potential of our opportunities will depend on the amount of effort we put into our goals. We cannot expect wonderful results from a minimum of interest or work.

When you commit to being the best in your field, you never stop asking yourself what else you can do to offer greater value: how to be faster, improve your prices, raise your quality. Those efforts show up in the results that others perceive and, of course, in your own results, your profits.

2.     Commitment to learning

This is a bit related to the previous one. We cannot expect our environment, our business to improve if we do not improve ourselves first. Changes start at home, so you should never stop investing in your personal or professional growth, nor in your business.

Any additional training, whether through courses, careers, postgraduate studies, requires sacrifices, but through consistency, satisfactory results are obtained. There is always room for improvement, and it is your duty to continually train yourself to keep or improve the quality of what you offer.

3.     Commitment to solutions

As noted at the beginning, many become paralyzed at the first inconvenience. Being disappointed when something goes wrong seems to suppress the commitment to the end result. As hard as it may sound, problems or obstacles will never stop arising. And that is when committing ourselves to face adverse situations always with the best willingness to solve them makes a huge difference.

4.     Commitment to one another

We are not alone. There is always someone there to support you in making your dreams come true. Sometimes it’s an employee, or a spouse, family, friends. And in other cases, it’s anyone whose small gesture has a huge impact on your day. Even that conversation when someone allowed you to unburden yourself of all that was weighing you down deserves to be repaid with a positive and grateful attitude every time.

You can only go far if you have someone by your side. Everything you have to offer on your own is wonderful, but it is never enough. Let yourself be helped and widen your horizons.

5.     Commitment to perseverance

There is no good story without setbacks. There is no triumph in war without fighting countless battles. You will fall, you will be paralyzed, you will be stressed, yes. But the greatest merit goes to getting back on your feet each time, keeping a strong mentality, and not being overwhelmed by those eventualities. Success is about pushing on even when others give up. Persevering makes up a huge percentage of the journey.
