The world is currently embedded within a historical era. Titled, ‘The Information Age’. Civilizations’ access to information has snowballed as our technology has developed. In this era, the idea that knowledge is power is as pervasive as ever. Information has become more and more available, society has progressed at break-neck speeds.
Technology breakthroughs have all changed society. Breakthroughs such as smartphones, self-driving cars, and the internet. Accessing information through the internet can enable individuals to gain skills and knowledge. This allows them to progress through life in a way that was impossible only 100 years ago. With information comes liberation. The ability to provide for yourself and to become as independent as possible.
Additionally, with information comes a more empathetic, understanding community. The ability to connect with people from across the world through social media. It provides humans with tools. Used for empathy and understanding in a way that was impossible before. Individuals can observe the injustices occurring in other countries. Make a difference by providing help and assistance, through the internet immediately.
However. There have been groundbreaking advances in the past 20 years. Thus, an abundance of information available to us. Inequality and prejudice still thrive. In the United States, success and power have been historically hoarded. Specific individuals. Which is why most U.S. Billionaires are white males. Within recent years, the idea that knowledge is power has become even more prevalent. Those who had the most access to information want to ensure that their power and success are not usurped. Nor wanting others to access this information.
This is why, in the United States, schools and universities were often segregated. White institutions had better funding, better teachers, and better resources. The popularity of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Donald Trump all peaked during times of unrest and uncertainty. When white Americans feared that their influence and power may be at risk.
Whenever societies go through periods of progress, there is always a counter-movement. Those who don’t want the status quo to change. We can observe this now. With the rise of the ‘Make America Great Again’ movement. Arguably, started in opposition to the progressiveness of the Obama era.
During the Trump presidency, there has been a massive pushback on more progressive ideas for this very reason. Policies such as free college education. Allow more people to access more information. Thus become more successful within society. This nation-wide success will transfer the power. From predominantly rich, white individuals, to all within America. This good for the majority. But unfavorable to those who want to continue hoarding their power.
The oppression of minorities is a direct consequence of this power imbalance. There have been steps taken in the past decades to provide minorities with more resources and opportunities. There is still a massive disparity between white and non-white individuals, however.
Historically, minorities have been oppressed and exploited for their labor. We can still see this in modern-day society. We need more information and education opportunities. Affordable and available to minorities, so society can progress. Civilization needs equality and teamwork to reach its maximum potential.
To reach complete equality, governments worldwide need to ensure that there is increased funding to minority school districts. Higher education becomes more accessible to non-white groups. The more knowledge that minorities have, the more help they are to the world. Minorities, when given the same opportunities as white people, have proved time and time again that they can excel and achieve incredible success. And with this success comes to progress and prosperity for all.
We have been given a unique opportunity now, with the end of the Trump presidency. Move forward from the prejudice and intolerance that the past four years have stoked. And embrace a more tolerant and generous world. Whilst the differences between us have been accentuated more than ever, we must all remember that, above all else, we are humans. To advance as a civilization is to advance together.
Oppressing vast amounts of societies will achieve nothing but destruction. The deterioration of humanity too. We need to enable every single person to have unlimited access to information and resources. We can band together and build a civilization that embraces progression, advancement, and growth. If we can unite and set aside differences we can move forward together in the right direction.
My book, Uprising of the Pencils, warns of the destruction and unrest that a continuing power imbalance may have on society. We must work together to ensure that civilization is allowed to nurture for the better. By embracing the idea that information is the antidote for civilization.
